Review: Advanced Character Design with Stephen Silver (Schoolism)
Last year I had the opportunity to take a course at Schoolism. If you don’t know them, Schoolism is one of the best online art schools out there. Their teachers are experienced professionals with a lot of years on the animation industry. Their courses are self-taught, with recorded online video-lessons, but you have the option as well to have the same lecturers to correct your work online every week. It’s way more expensed than the self-taught classes, but I think it’s worth it.
The course I signed up was the Advanced Character Design with Stephen Silver, after I took his fundamentals course as a self-taught classes a while back. Stephen Silver is currently one of the best character designers for animation. He has been working on shows such as Kim Possible, Danny Phantom or Kevin Smith’s Clerks (the animated series) for studios like Disney, Sony or Nickelodeon.
Sometimes it happens that talented professionals are not that good giving lessons, but this is definitely not the case. Honestly, I believe Silver has an innate capacity to be a teacher and an incredible ability to communicate the passion he has for be a better artist. Without any doubt, he’s the best lecturer I had so far and a truly inspiration.
The course is divided on 9 weekly lessons, and in each one you must show him your designs to prove you really understand the topics. Just with the online video-lessons your learn a lot, but when Silver review your work, correct your drawings and guide you each week, the course gets a whole new level. The character designs below are my work for this three months course, and I feel I improve a lot, so I can only recommend it. If a new course from him comes out, I’ll be there for sure.
